With the Whitewater Valley Explorer, we aim to take you on a journey while exploring our hometown's beautiful hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes. Hidden gems so magnificent it is hard to believe they are in our "backyard." A personal favorite hidden gem of mine is "Thistlewaite Falls" in Richmond.

In the early 1800s, Timothy Thistlethwaite blasted a new channel in the West Fork of the Whitewater River to direct the water over a rock formation and provide more waterpower to his nearby sawmill.

As you approach the waterfall, you can hear the gentle roar of the water as it cascades down the 20-foot rocky terrain. The mist rising from the pool of water at the waterfall's base creates a magical atmosphere, and you can feel the cool spray on your face as you get closer. In the summer, families enjoy a picnic and cool off in the water so clear you can see your feet as you stand the Whitewater River.

The sun shines on the water, creating a shimmering effect as it plunges into the river below. The lush vegetation surrounding the waterfall adds to its beauty, and you can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder as you stand before this stunning manmade wonder.

The falls are an excellent sight to SEARCH FOR ANCIENT FOSSILS among the rock formations along the river. Thistlewaite Falls is just south of Waterfall Road near Springwood Park and is a short hike.

Whether you are a seasoned traveler or a curious explorer, we have something for everyone. From the bustling main streets to the tranquil countryside, we have scoured every nook and cranny to bring you the best of what Fayette, Franklin, Wayne, Union, Ripley, Henry and Rush counties have to offer.

So sit back, relax, and let us be your guide to discovering the wonders of local travel. And when you are done, get out and explore!

The Whitewater Valley Explorer is a bi-monthly guide printed by Whitewater Publications, which also prints the Brookville American/Democrat, The Rushville Recorder, The Batesville Leader, and the Liberty Herald.
