McCashland leads Lady Pats to TEC win

The Union County Lady Patriots snapped a recent losing skid and posted their highest point total of the season (50) in Union City Saturday. UC spoiled the Lady Indians' senior night festivities with the help of senior Katie McCashland's career game dropping 28 points. Union County won 50-36 to improve to 7-12 on the season. The Lady Patriots are now at .500 in Tri Eastern Conference games with a 2-2 record.

McCashland scored the first basket of the contest after a steal and fast break layup. Union City got two points on the next possession, going inside to their 5'11” center Camryn Fischer. McCashland scored the next basket from outside the arc with Hallie Huges getting the assist. McCashland then made it a five-point UC advantage slashing the lane for two points; Nora Robinson was the next Lady Patriot to score, hitting a three-pointer, and UC was up eight just two minutes in. Union City dropped a three-pointer, but UC got Robinson another open look and she hit her second deep ball in a row. McCashland scored again, giving UC a 15-6 lead with 2:30 to go in the first. 

UC took an 11-point lead with McCashland scoring the first basket of the second quarter; Peityn Gillman scored the next Lady Patriots' bucket, then McCashland scored again off a steal to give UC a 21-6 lead. The Lady Indians got on the board midway through the frame, adding three points. A McCashland free throw was followed by three more Union City points, then a Hughes basket put UC up 24-12. The Lady Indians cut the lead to under 10 with a bucket and free throw, but with two minutes to go in the half McCasland added three more for the Lady Patriots. Four more Union City points came via the charity stripe and before the quarter expired they added a basket to make the score 27-21 midway.

Union City scored to start the third quarter, the Lady Patriots got a pair of McCashland freebies, then a Union City three-point basket made it just a three-point lead with five minutes to go. The Lady Indians added another two points before McCashland scored again on a floater in the lane. The Lady Patriots held a three-point lead until 1:30 remaining in the frame when Ally Gray sank a pair from the line. UC led 33-28 to start the final frame.

Hughes put the Lady Pats up seven to start the fourth, hitting a turnaround jumper near the free throw line. Union City scored but Robinson hit a three-pointer and UC was up eight with five minutes to go. The Lady Indians got a pair of free throws; McCashland added three points draining a deep shot from the corner, and Union City got two more points. UC led 41-34 with just under three minutes to go. McCashland hit a free throw, went back to the line on the next possession and hit two more, giving the Lady Pats a 10-point lead. Gray was the next Lady Patriot to go to the line and she added two more points to UC's total. Gray went back to the line hitting the front end. 

McCashland's 28 points led all scorers, Robinson finished with nine, Gray seven, Hughes four and Gillman two.

LYNN - The Lady Patriots battled the Randolph Southern Lady Rebels last Wednesday on the road. UC lost the contest 45-30, giving up 17 turnovers, while shooting just 18% in the contest. They hit one of 12 from deep and hit just seven of 39 from the field. McCashland's eight points led UC; she also collected six steals. Gillman finished with five points, Robinson, Long, and King had four each. Hughes had three and Haleigh Buttery added two off the bench.

UC hosts Knightstown (6-12) tonight in a conference matchup with a 6:30 varsity tipoff time, and they travel to Daleville (5-11) for a Saturday afternoon game that starts at noon.
