Rex A. Ratekin

Rex A. Ratekin, 78, lifelong resident of Rushville, passed away on January 20, 2024 in Rushville. He was born on October 16, 1945 in Rushville to the late Raymond Ratekin and Alta (Floyd) Lamb. Rex was a 1963 graduate of Rushville High School. He married Nancy (Shanahan) Ratekin on August 29, 1964; she preceded him in death on January 15, 2021. Rex worked his entire life in Rushville serving people through a varied career. He started his career with Standard Grocery and then became a linotype operator for the Rushville Republican. In 1972, he realized his career dream, graduating from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and becoming a member of the Rushville Police Department, where he served for 20 years, retiring in 1992. In his post-retirement years, Rex was not one to remain idle, serving as an assistant manager at the Rushville Walmart and working at Fujitsu Ten, among other jobs. Rex was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he was a lay minister, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed building model cars and painting ceramics. 

Rex is survived by his three sons, Mark A. (Kathy) Ratekin of Carmel, Denis M. (Patricia) Ratekin of Shelbyville, Pete R. (Chante) of Rushville, a daughter, Allana Marie (Brian) Edwards of Palm Bay, Fla.; sisters, Anna Jean Graham of Rush County and Linda Lamb Johnson of Connersville. He will also be missed by his 10 grandchildren. 

Rex is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nancy (Shanahan) Ratekin; brothers, Bert Harold Stout, Raymond Marshall Stout and Jimmie Stout. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 10:30 am in St. Mary Catholic Church, with Father Matthew presiding. Friends are welcome to visit the family from 4p.m.-8p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Moster Mortuary. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or to Riley Children’s Hospital.
