January 31, 2024 at 2:16 p.m.
The pregame and game ceremonies last Tuesday at FCHS were just what fans desired as the Lady Wildcats trounced conference foe South Dearborn 58-30 for the team's 14th win after honoring four-year standout Nicole Mears and manager Nikki Scott.
A 13-point run to open the second quarter set the stage for the eventual 28-point win. Tiffany Billman found Madesyn Sunderhaus for a three to open the second half, sending FC up 30-12. SD followed with a Bernadette Wismann field goal. The exact same sequence repeated itself to make it 33-16. Midway through the quarter, Billman had a 3 of her own and it was 38-16. Five points by Kendall Cox and a putback by Ruby Singer set the margin at 29. FC led 52-24 with a quarter left.
Mears opened the fourth with a traditional 3-point play and later added a foul shot before coming out to a rousing ovation.
Surprisingly the Lady Knights held the early lead at 4-0 after a three by Zoey Heizer. FC's first score came at 5:49 when the bank was open for Singer. A basket by Natalie Cantrell had SD nursing a 6-2 lead. The Cats then woke up with defensive pressure leading to hoops by Mears and Singer. A 3-point play by Mears led to the Cats holding an 11-9 lead after one.
Billman hit a three to trigger the second-quarter frenzy. Mears scored on the block and Billman finished an assist from Sunderhaus after a steal. Seconds later, Billman found Mears for two more and the Knights called time.
Mears had a putback off a missed foul shot and Singer converted two free throws. At 24-9, SD finally got on the board with a FT.
Mears fittingly led the way with a game-high 17 points and Singer had 14. Billman and Sunderhaus added 8 each, Cox 7 and Mackenzie Broshear and Bailey Kaiser 2 apiece.
FC (14-7) plays Greensburg tonight at the Lawrenceburg sectional, tip 6 p.m. A win would put FC into Friday's second semifinal against either LHS or Rushville. Greensburg is 5th in the latest Class 3A poll.
