Troy Mills

July 10, 2024 at 12:52 p.m.

Troy Mills, age 55, of Liberty, peacefully entered into Heaven on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, after a 15 month long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife and kids.

Troy was born in Richmond on February 6, 1969, and is the youngest child born to the late Gary Mills Sr  and Pamela Feldhaus Mills. Troy was raised in Richmond until the summer of 1986 when he moved to San Diego; he then graduated from Point Loma High School in 1987.

Troy married the love of his life, Lisa Smith, on July 6, 1999 in Gatlinburg; they spent just shy of 25 years together. They welcomed four children; two daughters, Cassie Stephenson (Sam) of Ohio, Masie Mills (Hunter Greye) of Liberty, two sons, Bo and Luke Mills, both still at home. He is survived by his wife and children.

Troy was a very dedicated family man and that was extremely obvious to all that knew him. His greatest accomplishments in life were his children and he loved being a very involved and present dad. He became a grandpa in 2016 and had no greater joy than being a “Poppy” to his three granddaughters, Izabelle Lucille Stephenson, Jocellyn Mae Stephenson, and Hazel Troy Greye. He was very excited to be expecting his first grandson in December.

During his time in San Diego, Troy worked at San Diego School of Baseball and the San Diego Chargers ticket office, before moving back to Richmond in 1991.  Troy was then employed for 27 years at Elder Beerman up to their closing in August 2018, most of that time spent as receiving manager. He then worked at Golden Living Nursing Center in maintenance for four years leading up to his illness in March 2023. Troy was a dedicated employee and loved his work family dearly. Troy loved to keep things fun in the workplace and chances are if you had the opportunity to work with him over the years, you fell victim to one of his many pranks.

Troy never met a stranger, he had a smile and a fist bump for everyone. He was a huge sports fan, but he had a passion for football, specifically the LA Chargers, which wasn’t hard to figure out because he wore their colors proudly, almost daily. He was a member of the Richmond dart league for many years and was affectionately known to his dart family as “T-Bone.” He was famous for throwing a french fry and hitting a double bullseye to win a game. Troy was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. He also coached baseball for the Union County Youth League for several years where he strived to make each player feel like they were an important part of the team.

Troy’s “glass-half-full” attitude and positive outlook on life continues to inspire many people to see the better side of life at all times.

In addition to being survived by his wife, children and grandchildren, he is also survived by his mother, Pamela Feldhaus Mills; three brothers, Peter Riemersma (Lena) of Michigan, Gary Mills (Kim) of Richmond, and Jason Mills (Kelly) of Richmond; one sister, Angel Guffey (Tim), of Ohio; four nieces, three nephews and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and family gathered on Saturday July 6, 2024 at Christ United Church located at 3430 Backmeyer Road, Richmond, IN 47374. The funeral service began at 2:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ United Church where Troy and his family are dedicated members.
