JoAnn Koester

JoAnn Margaret Koester, age 84, of Brookville died Monday, June 3, 2024 at her residence in Brookville.

Born December 14, 1939 in Whitewater Township, Franklin County she was the daughter of the late Herman L. and Helen (Newkirk) Stokes.  JoAnn was a graduate of the former Whitewater High School with the class of 1958.  She then attended Ball State Teachers College in Muncie where she received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1962.  She later completed her Masters in Business Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1972.

JoAnn taught at Whitewater High School from 1962 until 1973, teaching business and other classes.  She then went to work for the Department of Defense, US Navy from 1975 until her retirement in 1996, at Naval Air Station Key West, Florida and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, Georgia.

In her leisure time JoAnn enjoyed reading, bowling, traveling and taking bus tours, and being around family and friends.  She was a movie buff, and enjoyed science fiction movies, and history shows.

She was united in marriage to Richard A. Koester on March 1, 1969, and he preceded her in death on July 26, 2011.  They enjoyed their life together traveling, sailing and fishing.

Survivors include a sister, Janice Wyatt of West Harrison; a step-son, Gary M. Koester, as well as a step-granddaughter, Malissa Kubber, all of Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Wilson, and two step-sons, Mark A. Koester and Daniel D. Koester.

Family and friends visited Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville.

Pastor Jim Jones officiated the funeral service at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home in Brookville.  Burial was in Drewersburg Cemetery.
