On Feb. 22, 50 years ago, Lowell and Marge Yorn and Jack and Vicki Kellerman established Pizza Haus, a beloved Batesville business.

"Little did they know the memories and traditions that would be created here over the next half century." Pizza Haus shared on its Facebook page on the anniversary. "A sincere thank you to our customers, especially the regular, loyal friends we see often. You are the lifeblood of our restaurant. Words can-not adequately express what you mean to us. Over the years we have been lucky enough to have some really fantastic employees whose dedication will never be forgotten. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you, too.

“While the original four are no longer with us, we take pride in continuing the legendary Pizza Haus. So, yes, Happy 50th anniversary to us."

Pizza Haus has an interesting history. It all started in 1962 when Schmidt's Place opened on Walnut Street, selling doughnuts and pizza. In 1970, when Schmidt Bakery moved to the Batesville Shopping Village, the pizza part of the business was sold to Jake McKittrick and Brent Gibson. They renamed it Jake's Pizzeria. Later, the business moved to its current location and into a brand new building. This location used to be Hellmich's Standard Oil gas station. McKittrick and Gibson bought the pizza oven that Schmidt's had used for eight years, and they still use it to bake every Pizza Haus pizza to perfection.

In 1986, Lowell and Marge took over the Kellerman part of the business. After Mr. Yorn passed away in 2003, Marge ran the restaurant with her son, Kirk. Unfortunately, Marge passed away in 2013, and Kirk and his wife Ginny are now the owners of the Pizza Haus. They are steadfast on continuing the tradition of offering good food at reasonable prices.

Pizza Haus boasts an impressive 196,608 variations of its classic round pizza, allowing guests to create a different tasty combination every order. They also offer hoagies, burgers, salads, cheese sticks, bread sticks, chicken strips and a variety of sides including mac n cheese bites and Haus Fries.

Pizza Haus is located at 104 E. Boehringer Street, Batesville. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday & Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
