James D. (Doug) Sparks of Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, passed away on March 14, 2024, at the age of 70, after a brief illness. Doug was originally from Brookville, Indiana, but he had lived in Boiling Spring Lakes for twenty years. He was born on October 6, 1953, in Batesville, Indiana to James O. and Georgia (Greene) Sparks.

Doug was a remarkable person who had a fulfilling life. He graduated from Brookville High School in 1971, and then attended Eastern Arizona University, where he played football on a scholarship. Later, he retired from Visteon, where he served as a maintenance superintendent. Doug was also employed by the City of Boiling Spring Lakes, where he enjoyed his job mowing roadsides for the city.

Doug was a proud member of the Brookville American Legion Post 77 and the Boiling Spring Lakes North Carolina VFW Post 10400. He was a sociable person who enjoyed spending time with his many friends. He loved fishing, golfing, and drinking beer, which he often did with his buddies.

Doug is survived by his wife, Lorella Paugh-Sparks, his daughter, Dawn L. Libecap (Brad Hertel) of Brookville, Indiana; his stepchildren, Raina Colleen Lani (Davina Lani) of Indianapolis, Virginia C. Dhondt (Steve Dhondt) of Greenwood, Indiana, and David Sturgeon of Rushville, Indiana; and sister, Linda Knightstep of Wichita Falls, Texas. He also left behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Doug will be missed by his nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at the American Legion in Brookville in the future, where friends and family can gather to remember and honor him. Doug’s cremated remains will be scattered at a future date, in accordance with his wishes.
