Frosh’s no-no highlights UC’s week

Union County’s freshman pitcher Cole Cheatham picked up a loss in the Pats’1-0 loss to Hagerstown Thursday. In a battle of pitching, Cheatham dueled with Hagerstown’s Kaagen Kendall. Cheatham used a good combo of his three pitches to confuse the Hagerstown hitters, striking out 13 Tigers.
Kendall, an HHS junior with 21 games’ experience, did stifle the Patriots with a no-hitter and 12 Ks, but Cheatham finished the game with just 22 innings pitched in his young career and more strikeouts than 90% of all IHSAA pitchers. The freshman held the still unbeaten Tigers to just three hits and only one run while walking none. The Tigers averaged nearly eight per contest and had scored at least four runs in every game prior.
Caleb Brewer was UC’s lone baserunner who reached on a walk in the bottom of the second. The game remained knotted at 0-0 until the top of the sixth when the Tigers got a two-out double from senior Kayne Ervin. Ervin scored during the next at bat, after an error by UC’s catcher Brady Woeste. Cheatham got the next batter to ground out, but UC went down 1-2-3 over their next two innings at the plate.
The Pats earned a Tri-Eastern Conference victory Tuesday evening, defeating Lincoln 11-1. Cheatham was on the mound for the Patriots and already making his bid to be included in the UC pitching record book. Cheatham tossed a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts against the Golden Eagles. The Pat bats showed up for the contest and collected nine hits with three walks. Cheatham had three of those hits while Logan Boone was two for four at the plate and scored twice.
UC was unable to score in the first inning but put up three runs in the second, two more in the third and another in the fourth to go up 6-0. For insurance, UC added five more runs over the next two innings. It was unnecessary because every Lincoln batter went back to the dugout with a third strike called. Cheatham did walk three Eagles in the game and allowed a run to score in the final inning to lose a shutout. Isaiah Martinez scored twice for UC; Gavin Davis, Kyle Sams, Dalton Adams, and Andrew Hounchell each added a run.
Cheatham now sits in first place in the TEC in strikeouts with 57. Kendall slides into second place with 52. Sams is also in the top 10 with 34 Ks. The win was the second TEC victory for UC (2-3). UC sits at 5-9 under first-year head coach Dan Taylor, matching their win total from last year.
UC’s in search of another win tonight when they travel north to face Richmond. They will play at Knightstown Saturday in a doubleheader.
