Dogs shut out by rival Tigers

On the first rainy Friday of the season, the Lawrenceburg Tigers came into the Dawg Pound and pitched a 24-0 shutout against Batesville. It was the Bulldogs’ first time going scoreless since last year’s East Central game.

With weather issues all around the state thanks to a trace of Hurricane Helene, the two Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference foes faced some added adversity. Lawrenceburg tackled all of it head-on in building a 17-0 lead by the halftime break.

The first play from scrimmage set an ominous tone for the home side, tailback Isaiah Williams breaking off a 32-yard run to the Bulldogs’ 35-yard line. Williams picked up another first down before backfield mate D’Kari Mucker went the final 20 yards on a pair of runs to ring up the game’s first points. Ryan Hinthorne’s extra point made it 7-0.

BHS collected one first down on the ensuing drive but a sack of quarterback Will Jaisle led to a Bulldog punt.

The Tiger offense then chewed up the last five minutes of the opening frame and scored again on the third snap of quarter number two. In all, the drive consisted of 12 run plays as Mucker gained 28 yards on straight-ahead bursts and shifty sophomore QB Crue Gilmour added 58 including the final 41 yards and a 23-yard scamper into the end zone. It was 14-0 after the Hinthorne extra point.

Three Gage Pohlman runs were offset by an offensive holding call, leading to another Bulldog punt as the second period moved ahead. LHS returned the favor with a three-and-out of its own.

Following an incomplete pass on Batesville’s next series, Tiger defender Noah Knigga got to Jaisle for a strip sack and the Tigers were given a short field with which to work. The trio of Gilmour, Mucker and Landon Cornett advanced the pigskin for a 1st-and-goal at the 1. The Bulldog defense stiffened by pushing LHS back two yards on the next three plays; coach Ryan Knigga elected to send Hinthorne out for a successful 20-yard field goal.

A good return by Damien Dance gave BHS the ball near midfield but a sack and two penalties - intentional grounding and unsportsmanlike conduct - led to a third Jaisle punt.

After just one first down in the opening half, Batesville began showing more on offense. Zadiin Small got a rushing first down and Jaisle added another. However, the next three plays netted just a yard and a punt was in order. Lawrenceburg also punted, though BHS couldn’t gain any traction as the Dogs lost a fumble and later turned it over on downs after Dance had hauled in an interception on defense.

Williams, Cornett and Gilmour combined to produce the game’s final points, the QB going in from 10 yards after a bad snap early in the fourth. BHS had its best scoring opportunity on the next drive. An 8-yard pass to Dance created 1st-and-goal. A 17-yard reception by Alex Krekeler put the Dogs back in business after a big loss on a sack. Jaisle was then picked off in the end zone to end the threat. Cornett later intercepted Jaisle’s next pass to seal the win.

BHS (4-2, 0-2) will look to bounce back as Greensburg visits Friday, 7 p.m. The Pirates have not won since October 2022.
