Carolyn Witter Stearns

Carolyn Witter Stearns, 94, of West College Corner, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024, at McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital, Oxford. Daughter of Ross C. and Myrtle Sanford Witter, she was born March 27, 1930 at her parents’ home east of Liberty. She graduated from Short High School in Liberty with the class of 1948. She married Frank VanAusdall Stearns on June 26, 1948, in Oxford, Ohio.
Being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother were Carolyn’s proudest accomplishments. Carolyn was a stay-at-home mom while her six children were growing up, and then she worked at the Corner Store in College Corner for three years. She retired from Hatfield Insurance after 22 years. After retirement and her husband’s death, Carolyn volunteered at McCullough Hyde Hospital for over 20 years, (1997-2020) serving as chairman of same-day surgery, also assisting in medical records, retiring when Covid hit.
A long time member of College Corner Presbyterian Church, she served as financial secretary for over 30 years and she was also active in the women’s group. Carolyn particularly enjoyed monthly card games, dinners out, reading (and sharing books), and bingo with friends.
She is survived by daughters Alice (Ray) Rayburg of Arcanum, Ohio, Joyce (Don) Knight of Danville, Ind., Lisa (Mike) Mustin of Liberty; sons David (Brenda) Stearns of West College Corner, and Dale (Huong Le) Stearns of Oxford, Ohio. She is also survived by grandchildren Kevin Pohlar, Carole Kehl, Jennifer Brock, Michael Stearns, and Amber Hughes; 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, with another on the way, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Frank, daughter, Linda Jewell, grandson, Brian Pohlar, brothers Floyd, Mark, Wayne and Robert Witter, and sisters Martha Bothast, Geneva Curry and Irene Hartman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The College Corner Presbyterian Church on November 16, 2024 at 1:00 pm where friends and family may gather from 11:00 am until the hour of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the College Corner Presbyterian Church or your favorite charity.
