Richard Dunn

Richard Leon Dunn, 96 passed away on October 20, 2024. Richard was born on November 7, 1927, in Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norris and Glen Dunn, and his brothers, James and Hugh Dunn. Richard is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn Brackman Dunn, three daughters and two sons, his sister Ila Deen Olson of Gaithersburg, Maryland and brother Kenneth Dunn of Columbus, Indiana.
Richard was the cherished husband of Marilyn Brackman Dunn for 61 years. He was a dedicated and much loved father to Lisa Brown (MacKenzie) of Indianapolis, Melanie Young (Todd) of Liberty, Missouri, Jennifer Reifel (Philip) of Westfield, Brian Dunn (Lauren) of Chattanooga, and Andrew Dunn (Brooklein) of Franklin. He was also a beloved grandfather to Morgan Brown, McKenna Brown, Charles Young, Ella Reifel, Henry Young, Oliver Young, Ambrose Dunn, Ephraim Dunn, Owen Dunn, Wolfgang Dunn, and Callen Dunn and great granddaughter Amelia Brown.
Richard was a graduate of Whiteland High School in 1945 where he played basketball. In 1944, he led his team to the final eight at the state tournament. He was an alumnus of Franklin College in Franklin and graduated in 1950, where he served as the starting guard on the basketball team. Later he earned his Master of Education from Indiana University. He had an impressive career as a respected basketball coach and teacher at New Salem School from 1950 to 1990, concluding his teaching journey at Benjamin Rush Middle School in 1993.
Richard contributed to the community by delivering Meals-on-Wheels and maintaining the lawns of numerous Rushville residents following his retirement from teaching and coaching. Richard, who was affectionately known as “Coach Dunn,” was adored by his students, family, and friends. For 50 years, Richard was a charter member of the New Salem Lions Club. He was a member of the Little Flatrock Christian Church and held great affection for his church family. He lived his life in full service to others and the community of Rushville. He always put his family first and left a lasting positive impact on everyone who knew him. Richard was a devout man of God, a wonderful husband, brother, and father, known for his unwavering love, wisdom, and integrity.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville. Pastor Patrick Smith will preside. Friends are welcome to visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service the same day. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery, Rushville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Rush County.
