Union County High School (UCHS) senior Rosalyn Spurlock, who transferred to UCHS from Jacksonville, Florida, last year, was seeking a meaningful community service project to fulfill her required service hours. With guidance from John Seibert, she decided to add some spirit and pride to the roadways and parking lot around UCHS similar to what Seibert’s daughter had done several years ago.

“My community service project was to paint patriot heads on Layman Street and Patriot Blvd., continuing into the high school parking lot up to the concession stand at the front of the football field entrance, to be completed before homecoming for spirit week,” Spurlock explained.

She meticulously presented her concept, providing comprehensive details about her proposal, the planned workflow, the specific locations and dimensions of the Patriot head logos. Once she had her proposal complete, she had to gain approval from UCCCJSD Superintendent John Edge, UCHS Principal Randy Judd, UCCCJSD Athletic Director Ryan Overholt, UCCJSD Head of Maintenance Jeff Cerqa, Liberty Street Department Head Matt Reuss and the Liberty Town Council.

After being approved, Spurlock, with Seibert’s expertise, got started. First, the area had to be cleaned, and the layout had to be marked. She then painted the 3’x3’ white squares that act as the backdrop. Next came the blue and red paint that brought the mascot to life. The paint used was a fast dry paint, the same paint used by the Liberty Street Department, and the mascots were placed in the middle of the driving late to keep wheel traffic away from the painted areas.

The result: A whole lot of Patriot pride.

Spurlock said that although she had not done much painting before, she thoroughly enjoyed the project and was excited about the results.
