The Batesville Lady Bulldogs were never threatened in a Thursday conference matchup at Rushville ’s Memorial Gymnasium, defeating the Lady Lions 59-31. The home team didn’t reach double digits on the scoreboard until the third quarter, trailing 37-9.
Maddie Haskamp led all scorers with 18 points, getting to the rim with regularity to exploit the Lion defense. She added a team-high nine boards. Sophie Gesell scored 13. Lydia Haskamp and Alyson Peters (10 pts.) added to Batesville’s strong inside presence on the night. Peters picked up three steals on defense. BHS shot 48% from the field while holding the Lions to just 20%.
A Nora Wiedeman 3 was answered by Gracie Buzzard’s layup for a 3-2 BHS lead early on. By the time the Lions scored their next field goal, they were already down 23-3 midway through the second period. Mikayla Herbert and Trisha Morgan obliged with 2-point makes but at halftime the Lions were staring at an unsightly 33-7 disadvantage.
Carly Senour finally put the hosts in the double-figure column when her basket between Gesell buckets made it 37-11. Senour scored twice more and Buzzard once as RCHS dropped behind 46-18 at the end of three. The Lions, behind a series of threes by Herbert, T. Morgan and Charlotte Caviness, went for 13 in the fourth.
T. Morgan and Senour each had 9 points to pace the Lions while Herbert and Buzzard added 5 apiece.
With rival Connersville coming to Memorial Gym Saturday, the Lions put up a much better fight but still dropped their ninth consecutive game as the Lady Spartans finished out a 44-31 win. The game was knotted at 16 at intermission, CHS opening a 10-point spread early in the fourth.
Rushville led for much of the first half, T. Morgan launching a long two for a 3-2 Lion lead in a low-scoring start. Senour later hit a pair of free throws, making it 5-2. A physical first quarter resulted in the Lions reaching the 5-foul bonus with 2:09 remaining; T. Morgan hit 1 of 2 for a four-point lead. Ripberger did the same with 40 seconds left. Spartan freshman Kendyl Bottomley then completed a 3-point play as part of her game-best 19 points.
Bottomley followed in her own miss to tie things at seven in the early part of period two. Caviness had a quick response from behind the arc and Senour echoed that to make it 13-7. With just over four minutes left in the half, CHS’ Kylie McHenry buried a three to get the Spartans within a couple at 14-12. A steal and conversion by the guests’ Ahniyah Bennett produced another tie. Maddie Harrison had a rebound bucket for CHS, but K. Morgan put in a short jumper to even things at the break.
Bennett started feeling it when the teams returned from the locker room, scoring five in a row as part of her 8-point third quarter. Coach Winkler called timeout at the 5:40 mark. In the latter half of the frame, Addie Jones had a nice feed to Bottomley for two and Rushville finally scored with under three minutes to go as K. Morgan got one to fall. Buzzard stepped up for a 2-point jump shot but Bottomley found a wide-open path to the rim as CHS led 28-20 after three.
Bennett laid in two in transition early in the fourth for a 30-20 advantage. Jones’ 3-point combo pushed the lead to 13. Caviness popped a 10-footer, but Bottomley scored again to force a Lion timeout. Buzzard followed a Jones field goal with a 3-pointer; Bottomley was true again, however, and Rushville stopped play at 3:16 down 39-25. A Caviness deuce gave the Lions their smallest deficit down the stretch.
The sophomore Caviness came off the bench to lead RCHS in scoring with eight. T. Morgan and Senour put in 6 each and Buzzard chipped in 5. Bennett added 15 for the visitors.
RCHS (7-16, 2-5) wraps up the regular season Thursday at Columbus North.
