When a member of America's armed forces is injured in the line of duty, the seriousness of the tragedy is felt across our nation, especially in close-knit communities where these heroes call home.

Kelsee Lainhart, 20, and 2019 graduate of East Central High School, was identified as one of the U.S. service members injured in the attack on Kabul's airport on Thursday, Aug. 26. Among other towns across the State of Indiana, Brookville is lighting up social media with condolences, support, and prayers for Lainhart.

Two suicide bombers and a gunman struck one of the main entrances to Kabul's international airport, leaving at least 72 civilians and 13 U.S. service members dead. 

The U.S. said it was the most lethal day for American forces in Afghanistan since 2011. The White House stated President Joe Biden would look for opportunities to honor the service members who lost their lives, many in their early 20s.

On Saturday, the U.S. Department of Defense released the names of the service members who lost their lives Thursday.

Family members and family friends of Lainhart are utilizing social media to share updates on the marine. Bruce Lainhart posted the following on Aug. 28.

"PLEASE PRAY: We are fairly private people and weren't going to post anything on social media; however, I've realized that we need as many prayer warriors as possible and I want to be able to give updates to so many people that are texting and calling. For those that do not know, Kelsee was one of the Marines injured in the heinous suicide bombing attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Thursday. We are thankful she is alive, and my heart is broken for those that lost their lives. I cannot imagine what their families are going through. We don't have a ton of details right now other than she was severely injured and luckily made it to Germany to be treated in a better facility. She has a dear friend and fellow Marine named Molly by her side that is giving us updates as she can. We are so thankful for her being there every step of the way for Kelsee during this time. The plan right now is for her to be flown back to the U.S., praying today, so that Glen and I can be by her side. I know the power of prayer is powerful, and I need as many people praying for her and the others that were injured to return safely to the U.S. to their families. We are still numb and in shock and just need prayers. I know so many people care for Kelsee and are asking for updates, so I'll try to update as much as I can.

Please just get on your knees and pray for Kelsee to be healed. Pray for the families that are having to bury their children. Pray for the safety of the remaining Marines and soldiers still in Afghanistan. Pray for this crazy world we are living in today. ( I copied this off my cousin's post, please pray for Kelsee and her parents) This is my cousin Glenn & Stacy Lainhart's daughter. For those who know our family, it's daddy's baby brother Al Lainhart's granddaughter. This is the face of who you are praying for."
Bruce Lainhart shared another update on Aug. 29, stating, "This is the Update on Kelsee from her mom and dad :

"She made it safely back to the U.S. last night, and we are with her at Walter Reed Memorial.

I am going to be fairly vague for right now to protect her privacy. She has some serious injuries and had surgery today. Surgery went well, and she is recovering. We have been able to see her and talk to her. She is heavily sedated and has a breathing tube, so she cannot talk to us, but she responds with a nod or squeeze of our hand. She is very lucky to be alive as she has shrapnel in her temple above her right eye and near her spinal cord. I even got her to smile when I told her that her eyelashes looked pretty. She is in great hands here, and she has a team of doctors doing everything in their power to help her. They have been amazing. She will have a very long road to recovery, so she needs continuous prayers.

We are getting bombarded with messages, so we apologize if we don't respond."
