Girls Golf Good Start

A day after opening the season at the Joe Moehring Invitational at Richmond on Monday this week, Union County was host to their own Union County High School Girls Golf Invitational at Liberty Country Club on Tuesday.

And what a difference a day makes.

At Richmond, the Lady Patriots’ team score was 404. Individual scores were...Emma Kassens 87, Peityn Gillman 75, Mady McClure 103, Hannah Coffman 132.

“We didn’t do as well as I hoped we would,” UC Coach Ryleigh Waltz-Kennedy said.

At the UC Invitational at the Liberty Country Club on Tuesday, the Lady Patriots’ 372 team score was second only to Batesville’s 334. All four UC golfers trimmed a total of 32 strokes off their individual  scores.

Kassens took eight strokes off yesterday’s 87 to 79 a day later. Gillman reduced her 81 Richmond score by seven to a 75. McClure cut six strokes from her previous 103 score to finish with 97. And Hannah Coffman, the new-comer on the team, shed 11 strokes from the 132 first day outing to drop her score to 121.

Coach Kennedy, in her second year at the helm of the UC girls golf program, couldn’t be more pleased.

“Yes huge improvement!! I am hoping to continue to see improvement as the season progresses,” Kennedy said. “The girls have worked very hard this summer and I am very proud of the scores that they posted today.”

UC finished the season 13-2/7-0 a year ago with five players on the team. Two were seniors who graduated with the Class of 2022. Kassens, Gillman and McClure returned this season, but lacked one to compete as a team before Hannah Coffman joined the Lady Patriots this season.

Batesville is off to a great start this season with back-to-back invitational wins and so is Union County.

The Lady Patriots host a three-way Tri-Eastern Conference meet with Lincoln and Tri Friday, 5 p.m. UC is at Monroe Central for a dual meet on Monday, Aug. 8. The Lady Pats return to Liberty Country Club Thursday, Aug. 11, with East Central visiting.
