August 16, 2022 at 9:06 p.m.
Franklin County had a rough start to the 2022-23 girls soccer season Monday, getting shut out by Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference rival East Central 9-0. The game ended with 15 minutes left in the second half due to the mercy rule.
The Wildcats held off the Lady Trojans for a while in the first half, then about halfway through, East Central's offense scored a goal. This sparked their offense to score three more goals. The score was 4-0 East Central to end the first half.
In the second half, East Central had a quick start by scoring a goal almost immediately, along with having a penalty kick where they scored a goal. Franklin County's offense couldn't get any goals due to East Central's stingy defense. Bethany Melugin and Kylee Bolser both had shots at goal, though. The Wildcat defense put up a good effort along with goalie Liz Wendel having 14 saves.
A goal by Bolser and one by Madesyn Sunderhaus helped FC to a 2-0 win over Centerville in an IHSAA scrimmage Saturday. The JV team also won in a shootout period.
The Lady Wildcats will be back at it this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Rising Sun at home.
