Patriots football off to good start at scrimmage
August 17, 2022 at 7:46 p.m.
The football scrimmage between South Decatur and Union County last Friday could be scored as a tie although official scores were not kept in the allowed time.
The Patriots got off to a good start (drove to the 10-yd. line in first down possession), mixed up the offense (rushing and passing) and found the end zone more than once.
Defensively, the Patriots were all business, especially in the red zone.
“Having stopped them at the 1-yd. line for what seemed like 5 plays in a row, was great to see,” UC Coach Joel Hofmann said. “Scott Watterson has really worked with the defense on tackling fundamentals and it paid off.”
The Pats are at full staff with 28 players, including a pair of kickers, a coaching staff of five, and two student trainers.
“We’re excited to have Rhett (Hollen) and Ty (Elleman) in the kicking game,” Hofmann said. “I think they will help tremendously as they both have really strong legs and can allow our other guys to get off the field and rest on kicking situations.”
All in all it was a good showing - the Patriots made first downs, touchdowns, tackles including sacks, made mistakes and came away with a good feeling to start the season.
With success at scrimmage, UC is back on the practice field preparing for the upcoming trip to Northeastern Friday, Aug. 19, and the first home game of the season when Lincoln visits on Aug. 26.
