August 23, 2022 at 8:59 p.m.
A local man is facing serious felony charges after provoking an exchange of gunfire with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Dept. The incident resulted in charges being filed against Zachary Chetwood, 31, of Cedar Grove, and include:
Attempted Aggravated Battery (L3);
Attempted Battery with a Deadly Weapon (L5);
Intimidation Using a Deadly Weapon (L5);
Criminal Recklessness (L5);
Pointing a Firearm (L6);
A jury trial was initially scheduled for Sept. 12, 2022, but is continued until Jan. 6, 2023. Chetwood was originally held without bond but was released on Aug. 1 on a $25,000 bond.
On Friday, May 13, deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office responded to an address on Main Street in Cedar Grove at approximately 10:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an adult male who was suicidal and in possession of a gun. Ultimately, upon arriving at the residence, the deputies encountered the man still possessing a firearm—Chetwood fired multiple shots at the officers. The deputies returned fire, striking the suspect at least one time.
No officers were injured in the incident. However, Chetwood was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained. Chetwood was released from the hospital and booked into the Franklin County Jail on charges filed.
In May 2020, a Petition to Retain and Seize Firearms and Request for Hearing was filed in the Franklin County Circuit Court against Chetwood. A Probable Cause Affidavit was also filed stating Chetwood was a law enforcement officer with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Department and was believed to be a "dangerous individual.” As a result, on Dec. 1, 2020, the following firearms were seized from Chetwood's home, including:
Remington 30-06 Bolt action rifle;
CZ-USA 12 Gauge shotgun;
Sig-Sauer P229 handgun;
Beretta 92fs handgun;
Kimber 1911 style handgun;
Beretta 92x handgun;
Glock 36 handgun;
Glock 19 gen 4 handgun;
Smith and Wesson M&P Shield handgun.
Under the law, criminal charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
