McCool goes out with roar

The name Kamryn McCool appears no fewer than 15 times in the Mount Saint Joseph University softball record book – and 12 of those have her alone or tied at the summit.
The 2018 Franklin County High School graduate who starred for the Lady Wildcats with twin sister Kendall owns career marks for strikeouts (500), saves (13), appearances (93), earned run average (1.28) and single-season standards for wins (19 in 2022), innings pitched (168.2), punchouts (180), appearances (31), saves (tied with 4), games started (26), complete games (24) and shutouts (7).
Her right arm also helped the Lions to their first-ever NCAA Division III regional championship in May.
As a No. 4 seed, MSJ traveled to State University New York-Geneseo May 13 to face the top-seeded hosts. The Lions pulled off the upset, 7-5. McCool threw a complete game for the win.
Next day it was the Mount taking on No. 2 seed Babson for the right to advance to the regional title match. After the Lions tied the game at 1 apiece, McCool found her groove and hurled three scoreless frames. She finished off a 3-1 victory as her teammates found enough offense. The Babson run was unearned, and the Beavers managed just 2 hits. McCool fanned 9.
Mount St. Joe's needed to defeat Babson just once on May 15 for the championship, whereas their opponent would need two victories.
Babson got to McCool and the Lions in the opener, winning 4-2. In a winner-take-all affair, MSJ defeated Babson 5-3 to get to the Super Regional round.
McCool was one of four Lions on the All-Regional team after striking out 15 in 19 stanzas.
At Salisbury, Maryland on May 20, the Lions faced off against the Salisbury Sea Gulls, ranked fourth in the country. McCool dominated but MSJ bats weren't up the task in a 1-0 defeat. The Lions would need two wins the following day to advance to nationals.
A pair of aces, McCool and Salisbury's Lindsey Windsor, squared off on Saturday, the 21st. McCool got through three complete innings (1 hit allowed) before a disastrous fourth – seven unearned runs due to Lion errors – chased her for the final time. 7-0 was the final.
"We worked our butts off in the offseason, getting up early, working out and putting in extra work,” McCool was quoted after the season-ending loss. “Our girls stick together, and we made it for the long run. It got cut short a little bit, but I am super proud of them.
“It's been an incredible four years and I cannot thank my family enough for coming to all of my games and supporting me. I want to thank my teammates for always being there for me and backing me up and my coaches for always believing in me. We definitely wouldn't be here without all of them. I am definitely going to miss it.”
Head coach Beth Goderwis: "I can't be more proud of what we've accomplished. It's been an incredible year. This kid (Kamryn) got her 500th strikeout in the game, which is incredible and to do that in 3 years and 16 games is even more incredible. She is going to be missed next year.”
In the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tourney, McCool started every game – 21 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 25 Ks. She made the HCAC's Academic All-Conference list (minimum 3.5 GPA).
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named her to the Division III All-Region 2nd Team.
McCool is the daughter of Tim and Leah McCool of Brookville.
