BPD holds fundraiser “Tase the Chief”
July 12, 2022 at 7:38 p.m.
The Brookville Police Department announced a fundraiser with a goal to raise $4,000 for the purchase of a K9, and within 48 hours the goal was met. The Brookville Police Department has not had a K9 unit for the last five years.
Police Chief Terry Mitchum is at the center of the fundraiser. The department started a Gofund me account for donations, promising the community if the goal was met Mitchum will take 50,000 volts from one of the department's new tasers.
Since the goal has been met, Mitchum will be tased at the department's second annual golf tournament on Oct. 8. Anyone who donated is invited to watch live at the Brookhill Golf Course. The event will also be live streamed via the Brookville Police Department Facebook Page.
The BPD shared more about tasing, and the safety protocols in place for community members with concerns.
“Officers have the opportunity to partake in annual taser trainings. During those taser trainings officers that haven't been tased are encouraged to do so. Some officers have also chosen to be tased at more than one annual training. This allows officers to understand the amount of force utilized when a taser is deployed in the line of duty and allows them to testify for court purposes with first-hand experience. A majority of your local officers have been tased and several of them on more than one occasion. Prior to being tased officers sign a liability release form. This removes liability from the law enforcement agency, the local government, the individual deploying the taser, and most importantly the tax payers.
Instead of being tased privately during training Chief Mitchum has chosen to do so publicly in effort to assist our K9 fundraiser.
The same safety protocol will follow and the same liability forms will be used. The only difference is the chief is choosing to be tased publicly. So far this has greatly assisted our fundraising efforts (we met our goal in 2 days) and will also provide the public an educational experience on taser deployment.”
Fundraising will continue to be active until the golf tournament. Any donations made past the goal are greatly appreciated and will be utilized for the K9 fund.
