Prosecuting Attorney Chris Huerkamp announced charges have been filed against two local individuals from an incident that occurred on July 11 at the Riverfront Apartment complex in Brookville.
Charles E. Campbell, 62, of Brookville and a member of the Brookville Town Council, has been charged with Battery on a Police Officer, a Level 6 Felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor. His wife, Donna K. Campbell, 56, also of Brookville, has been charged with Resisting Law Enforcement.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed in Charles Campbell's case, several Franklin County Sheriff's Department Deputies responded to the scene to assist the Brookville Police with a report of a fight and possible stabbing. The deputies were approached by Charles Campbell, who was wielding a wooden club. Campbell was ordered to drop the club, but he refused and was eventually taken to the ground by the deputies.
At the same time, Donna Campbell, identified as his wife, began to interfere with the deputies' attempts to subdue Charles. While the Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, Charles twice kicked Deputy Dakota Huntsman in the leg.
Charles Campbell was arrested that evening and booked into the Franklin County Security Center. He later posted bond and was released. An initial hearing on his case is scheduled for July 26, 2022, in Franklin Circuit Court before Judge Clay Kellerman. Donna Campbell was not arrested that evening, and a summons has been issued for her appearance at an initial hearing scheduled for Aug. 16.
Finally, Huerkamp noted that the charges are merely allegations, and all criminal defendants and suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Following Chuck Campbell's arrest, he released the following statement: "With respect to the incident Tuesday morning involving my family and the police, I want to say how sorry I am how things turned out. My intention that night/morning was to be a good father to my daughter. I apologize those aspects of my personal life have gone public, and I hope to resolve the case as soon as possible. This event in no way impacts my dedication to serving the people of Brookville as part of the Town Council. I am committed to making this town the best it can be for all its citizens. I'm asking for your patience and understanding as this gets resolved."
Investigations into other incidents at the Riverfront Apartment complex from that evening remain ongoing.
