Community members dancing in the street

On Saturday, July 16, Baltimore Street in Laurel was temporarily closed for the community's first "Street Dance" in decades. The event was a success; over 200 people were in attendance.
Volunteers began decorating the street on Saturday morning, draping strands of soft white lights and Japanese lanterns across the street, creating a perfect ceiling to dance under, and dancing there was. Community members of all ages could be seen dancing in the tree-lined street to various classics.
"It was so fun," volunteer Linda Adams said, "The street looked so pretty lit up."
Along with dancing sloppy joes, walking tacos, hot dogs, chips, popcorn, candy bars, and soda pop were available within the community center. All items were one ticket. Tickets were six tickets for $5, making items less than a dollar each. Inside the community center, seating was provided—outside seating showcased banquet-style tables dressed in white table cloths in the street with a perfect view of the dance floor.
Behind every great community event are passionate volunteers. Michelle Spurlock and her family spearheaded the event. "The inspiration (for the event) is simply my love for the town and my family's love for the town," Spurlock shared. "I'm proud of where I grew up; Laurel is and always will be my home."
Spurlock acknowledged that the town has fallen on difficult times but shared residents want to bring the community back together.
The event held nostalgia for Spurlock. "Since one of the last events I remember attending before the town took a turn before the high school was shut down was the summer street dance," Spurlock reminisced. "It just seemed right to me that this event would be the first my family would organize and host in an effort to get people together and just have a good time again."
