Spaeth to succeed Begley as auditor
July 20, 2022 at 7:19 p.m.
With current Union County auditor Cheryl Begley deciding not to run for re-election this fall, no candidates had appeared on the May primary ballot for that county seat. That changed recently as Dennis Spaeth, county Democratic chair, stepped up to file his papers prior to the final deadline of July 3.
According to current UC clerk – and Democratic candidate for recorder in the fall – Loree Persinger, Spaeth is the assumed county auditor come Jan. 1, 2023, and will hold his first public office beginning then.
Spaeth works as an officer in community corrections, filling that role for Union County Community Corrections until transferring to neighboring Fayette County Courthouse Community Corrections around the start of 2021.
Begley, a retired clerk-treasurer and grant administrator for the Town of Liberty, came out of retirement to run for auditor in 2018 at the behest of the county Democratic Party. She ran unopposed and is completing her first term in the position.
Had no candidates filed, Begley would have remained as auditor indefinitely barring a resignation, in which case the local political parties would hold caucuses to nominate a replacement.
