Last weekend’s girls and boys soccer scrimmage was a good warm-up for the fast approaching Union County and Richmond soccer seasons.

The UC girls initiated new coach Suzanne Minges with an enlightening performance.

“The girls played very, very well today. I am very, very happy,” Minges said. ”We have a couple players who have never walked on the field at all, but all in all they did very, very well.”

The Lady Patriots’ roster contains six seniors-Michaela Tolford, CeCe Groen, Lilly Fields, Emma Cobb, Brooklyn Vauthier, Keilynn Jones), five juniors (Kyleigh Payne, Kylie Fields, Mia Cannon, Harmony Horning, Julianna Goecke), two sophomores (Bella VanWinkle, Hailey Grimes), and three  freshmen (Sierra Vance, Heaven Fritts, Ellie Peters).

Minges found a couple things they will work on in practice.

“When to drop on defense,” Minges said. “And on offense, when to move up and keep pushing. We’ll work on that.”

Boys Scrimmage
Returning coach Dave Reeder has a 14-man roster with 10 upperclassmen leading the way.

Seniors - Bradley Meadows, Ty Elleman, Peyton Torres-Cruz, Rhett Hollen. Juniors - Logan Harris, Josh Derickson, Jeremiah Hamblin, Caden Coffman, Robert Brookbank, Aden Eversole. Sophomores (Devin Hill) and freshmen (Wyatt Brookbank, Thatcher Coffman, Nathaniel Tolford).

“We played well today,” Reeder said. “But have a lot of youth  out there.”

Last year the UC roster contained two seniors they must replace this season.

“It’s always hard to replace that senior leadership,” Reeder said. “But that’s part of the process.”

It isn’t unusual for soccer teams to play three games in a week and that is the case in the first two weeks of the 2022 season, Aug. 15-20 and Aug. 22-27.

UC began the season this past Tuesday at Batesville and returned home a day later to host New Castle and Greensburg this coming Saturday, Aug. 20.

Next week UC hosts Rushville Tuesday, Aug. 23, goes to Tri-County North Thursday, Aug. 25 and Connersville Saturday, Aug. 27.
