Longstanding local family farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards for operating for at least 100 years, including Snyder Farm, in Union County. Snyder Farm has been operating since 1891 and received the "Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award."
"Farming is so important to Southern Indiana, both economically and culturally," Representative Randy Lyness (R-West Harrison) said. "The agriculture industry has such a tremendous impact on our communities, and farming families like the Snyders contribute greatly to our growth. I wish them continued success for many more years to come."
The Snyder Farm was among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
"I commend these families for maintaining their farm for more than 100 years, as they play a tremendous role in supporting our local communities and state," Senator Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond) said. "It is farms like the Robert and Anna Frey Farm and the Snyder Farm that continuously make Indiana an agricultural leader."
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer, commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
