Community members become heroes in the face of tragedy

By Cassie Garrett-

On Aug. 15, the Liberty community was rocked by the tragic event involving beloved community member and bus driver Stephen Posco. As a result of a medical emergency, Stephen's bus crashed into a residence behind College Corner Union School. Two days later, he passed away.

However, in tragedy, the community members of Union County show they rally, stand together, support each other like family, and even recognize the good when it seems there isn't any.

The day after the accident, Sheriff Dale Dishmond reviewed the footage caught on the bus camera and was blown away by what he saw.

"On behalf of the citizens of Union County, we would like to recognize the following people for their acts of heroism," Dishmond said. "Three people stepped up in heroic fashion at the time of a tragedy in our community."

Those three individuals were Michael Leas, Tyler Robbins, and Amy Payne. So, on Monday evening Stephen's wife and Sheriff Dishmond came together to recognize and thank these local heroes for their actions.

The first person recognized was 12-year-old Michael, who was on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus camera showed that Michael orchestrated the evacuation of all students on the bus. Michael then climbed over seats to the front to get to his bus driver Steve Posco to try to assess him. After, he made sure all students had evacuated before evacuating the bus himself.

The following two heroes honored were Amy and Tyler. After students were off the bus, Tyler and Amy got onto the bus to render aid to  Posco, including CPR.

The three were presented with plaques that said “Hero” on behalf of the entire community.

"Everyone did everything possible though the outcome was not what we had prayed for," Dishmond said. "We did not want these heroic acts to go unnoticed and felt that it was imperative that we show these special people a special recognition. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Melissa and Callie. We would like all involved to know that you have an amazing community behind you."
