The Union County Community Foundation has announced Payten Logue as Union County's 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. Payten is a senior at Union County High School where she has served as FFA President and vice president of community engagement.
She is a 10 year 4H member, and plans to attend Purdue University to major in business management or agricultural business. She hopes then to pursue management of nonprofit organizations or “continue my passion in agriculture,” she said.
The scholarship provides full tuition and books for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis at any eligible Indiana public or private college or university. Consideration in this award was given to Leadership, Character, Honors, Community Involvement, and Essays Written. Payten certainly fits the bill– throughout her high school career, she has been active in both her school and community. She is known for working with youth, volunteering at the library and tutoring in her school district, as well as leading FFA and playing softball, all while working multiple jobs.
Payten is the 18-year-old daughter of Branden and Jessica Logue. She has a 14-year-old sister, Jorden, and a 12-year-old brother, Colten. Branden and Jessica expressed their gratitude for this award, saying, “We are humbled and beyond grateful to the Lilly Foundation and the Union County Community Foundation for selecting Payten for this honor. We are proud of the kind, mature young woman Payten has become.”
The scholarship program is administered locally by Indiana community foundations, and statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana with funding provided by Lilly Endowment. The Endowment hopes that this program will continue to encourage many of Indiana's most talented students to attend one of Indiana's higher education institutions and after graduation pursue occupations in Indiana.
The primary purposes of the scholarship program are to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
Payten says she was surprised to be selected, and graciously praised her other classmates. “I feel so incredibly blessed to be awarded the Lilly Scholarship. I am honored to have been chosen among such a wonderful group of finalists in my class.”
