Franklin County sanitarian David Fehlinger inspected 70 food-serving establishments in 2022's third quarter (July-September). These included bed and breakfast businesses and temporary permits.

There were 21 of 38 locations in Brookville earning a clean slate, with two spots being asked to clean and sanitize common areas frequently. Among the other 17 stops, seven contained at least one critical finding.

Moldy ice machine interior, small flies around the fruit and vegetable sink, mouse droppings in cabinet under a drive-thru soda dispenser, large/small flies in kitchen and storage room, cooked food in walk-in cooler not dated for holding, back room slicer/meat carrier pitted and not easily cleanable and pizza/sandwiches in warmer not timed for disposal were among the critical marks. These were to be remedied immediately or within one day.

Brookville non-critical citations included moldy ice chutes (fixes ranging from six hours to one day), dirty flooring (2 days), dusty intake tiles (3 days), dirty salt/pepper shakers (immediate), dirty microwave (immediate), moldy fan covers/door jambs in reach-in cooler (one day), moldy/dirty soda nozzles (immediate to one day), grease drip from ventilation hood (one day), dirty dispensing pans (one day), dusty ceiling tiles (3 days), dirty milkshake mixer (immediate to one day), dirty light switches (immediate), dirty cooler racks (one day), outside property littered with garbage (3-5 days), dirty can opener blade (immediate), dirty equipment exteriors (14 days) and tea dispensers not covered (immediate).

Six sites were reminded to clean and sanitize common areas frequently.

In Metamora, a dishwasher sanitizer on the fritz netted a critical citation to be corrected immediately. At the same site, there were non-criticals – dirty salt/pepper shakers (immediate) and moldy walk-in cooler (7 days). Another visit in the village produced a clean record.

Nine of 13 establishments inspected in Batesville earned the 'no violations noted' summary. Citations issued elsewhere were non-criticals. These were moldy soda machine ice chute (immediate), prep station handles not easily cleanable (7 days), moldy areas of walk-in cooler (3 days) and dusty ceiling tiles above food prep area and dining room (one day). Four sites were told to clean and sanitize common areas frequently.

A total of four stops in Cedar Grove and Enochsburg led to zero violations.

Laurel saw four of seven businesses receive a clean summary. One critical was noted nearby as there was no certified food handler (manager's certificate expired); this was to be corrected within 60 days. At the same site, there were a pair of non-criticals with one-day fixes required – mouse droppings in cabinets below salad/dessert bars and dishwasher not dispensing sanitizer. Non-criticals showed up at two other establishments; these were bathroom door not self-closing (7 days), moldy soda nozzles (one day) and grease drip from ventilation hood (3 days). One place was reminded to clean and sanitize common areas frequently.

In Oldenburg, four of five visits had zero violations; however, the other turned up a total of two critical marks and seven non-critical etches. Criticals were kitchen, dining room and basement covered with various-sized flies (3 days) and moldy ice machine interior (immediate). Lesser violations were dirty flooring (14 days), dirty grease trap (3 days), dusty ceiling tiles (one day), bucket of gray water in basement (immediate), dirty prep station interior (one day) and dirty equipment exterior (7 days); a note was made to wash and sanitize common areas frequently.

A New Trenton establishment had a critical as there was no certified food-handling manager employed. The site was also told to clean and sanitize common areas frequently.

Health inspections are a matter of public record and can be obtained by request from the FC Health Dept.
