The Indiana Library Federation (ILF) announced its annual awards at the 2022 Annual Conference in Indianapolis in November. The Union County Public Library was recognized with the Outstanding Library Award. This award recognizes outstanding library service that consistently exceeds the expectations of the users and serves as an exemplary model for other libraries. The Union County Public Library has made substantial contributions for the betterment of their community and is currently expanding its services to improve the health and well-being of the community. Through collaborative efforts, the library has created programs such as adult book clubs, computer gaming for teens, a monthly luncheon for older adults, yoga and Zumba classes for all ages, a summer reading program, and much more. “They act as a community center providing meals to all members, outlets for mental and physical health, fostering a love for reading and education, artistic outlets through crafts, and most importantly, a safe place for anyone when they may not have anywhere else,” said Olivia Chewning, Union County Special Projects Coordinator. Service and innovative solutions are at the heart of UCPL. One example is the bi-weekly free laundry program. “Patrons are given rolls of quarters to help keep their families in clean clothing. Free books for both children and adults are also available at the local laundromat,” said Carol Reynolds-Mccashland, trustee for UCPL.
UCPL Business Manager Clara Sizemore was then recognized with the Outstanding Library Staff Award. “Clara is the definition of the employee that everyone wants to hire,” said UCPL Director, Julie Jolliff. “She arrives to work early, always on task, and is excellent in her position. Whatever the task, she will do it without complaint.” Co-worker Trudi Hadden echoed Jolliff's sentiment: “Clara is a dedicated library worker who has a wide variety of skills which she puts to use at our library. Everything from faithfully watering and taking care of our many plants indoors and out, cooking meals for our children, processing books, ordering supplies, helping fellow staff with their computer and printer skills, to doing the payroll and paying our bills. No chore is too menial or too difficult for her.” Each year, the ILF celebrates the work of its members, highlights and honors books of authors that excite its members, and provides financial assistance through ILF scholarships.
