A Union County High School teacher was recently awarded the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant.
Jennifer Brannon, a teacher at Union County High School, is one of two teachers in Indiana to receive the $500 award this year.
Mrs. Brannon has 72 high school students in three Principles of Human Services classes who learned about what was developmentally age appropriate in early childhood education.
The high school students made monsters out of felt using various hand stitches and wrote a story about the monster. The high school students delivered them to Liberty Elementary School Kindergarden students on Thursday, Nov. 3, to complete the project.
“FCCLA will use the leftover money to make scarves and hats for Ayla’s Closet,” Brannon said.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is included in the Consumer Sciences education curriculum and operates within the school system.
The DAR's Junior Membership Committee sponsors the annual grant program. Two $500 grants are available for each state and the District of Columbia.
Applicants must be a classroom teacher for grades kindergarten through 12th grade and the grant money must benefit the classroom students. The application must be endorsed by a local DAR chapter. Jennifer applied through the John Conner Chapter, DAR, of which she is a member.
One of the largest patriotic women's organizations in the world, DAR has 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters across the country and several foreign countries. DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service and more.
