Oldenburg Academy girls seek continued growth
November 9, 2022 at 5:35 p.m.
In Eric Feller's second year on the sidelines, Oldenburg Academy girls basketball doubled its win total from four to eight and nearly gave the coach his first sectional victory.
Can the Lady Twisters up their total yet again this season?
The quest to do so begins Friday evening at the Hillenbrand Family Feldhaus as the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels visit. The Southwestern tour continues Saturday night in Shelbyville against the Lady Spartans.
Seniors Ashley Borgman and Hannah Haverkos lead a unit that now contains a majority of upperclassmen who initially cut their varsity teeth during Feller's debut in 2020-21.
Borgman, a forward, can score in spurts and had a 10-point effort against neighboring Franklin County a year ago. Haverkos is her frontcourt mate with a backcourt mindset, often disruptive on the defensive end.
A strong junior class should be counted on in 2022-23 for a bulk of the offense, rebounding and defense (primarily blocks and steals).
Forward Ellie Ryan can fill it up from both the inside and outside, posting games last year of 19 (vs. Switzerland Co.), 15 (sectional loss to Rising Sun) and 12 (vs. Morristown). In the backcourt are Kate Weber and Rachel Lamping. Weber, along with solid perimeter defense, added 11 points in the sectional defeat. Lamping handles a lot of the point guard duties and lands the occasional jumper.
Sadie Wachsmann, Lilly Schebler and Lea Cossentino round out a sizable junior group.
After showing much promise this fall in soccer and volleyball, respectively, sophomore Addisyn Lambert and 6-foot freshman Rachel Suttmann will see what they can bring to the hardcourt over the winter.
Other Feldhaus contests are Jac-Cen-Del and Morristown (Nov. 18-19), North and South Decatur (Dec. 1 & 3), Rising Sun (Dec. 6), Franklin Co. (Dec. 16), Waldron (Dec. 29), Hauser (Jan. 10), Tri High (Jan. 17) and senior night against Milan (Jan. 24).
The sectional will be contested at SW Shelbyville the first week of February.
