Veterans day 2022

Americans everywhere  paused last Friday, Nov. 11 to honor this country's more than 20 million brave fighting men and women.

The local Veterans Day program at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium was a  combined effort of American Legion Post 122,  Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1472 and Union County students and administrators.

Past Post Commander of American Legion and Current Trustee of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tech Sergeant Robert Napier opened the program with a warm welcome, a prayer, and the posting of colors by a local honor guard of veterans.

The UCHS Choir led the National Anthem and “God Bless the USA” and the UCHS Band honored all veterans with a medley of military songs.

The posting of colors was carried out by local veterans prior to the introduction of guest speaker, Master Chief Petty Officer Submarines Retired Jeff Mathews.

“I thank Union County High School for having us come and be with you today,” Mathews began. “It's not often we get to share with tomorrow's leaders in a group setting.”

Mathews said Veterans Day is a day we honor our nation’s military heroes.

“The heroes I speak of could be sitting across the kitchen table from us. The heroes I speak of are the men, women, brothers and sisters who have raised us and taught us right from wrong. These are our veterans.”

“There are heroes among us here today...We need to thank them for their sacrifice and courage and for their service to our country,” Mathews continued. “And I see you out there as the next warriors stepping up to carry our freedom forward. How will you be guided? Will you be guided by the core values of our military...loyalty, duty, selfless service, honor and personal courage?”

The program concluded the playing of “Taps” by band member Ethan Powers before Mathews rushed to the microphone to share an additional message that brought the audience to their feet and enthusiastic applause from everyone in the audience – “Bob Napier has been instrumental in carrying out our Veterans Day programs for many years,” Mathews began. “And he recently celebrated his 92nd birthday.”

It was a perfect conclusion  to the day that honored Napier and all veterans.
