BROOKVILLE – Thanks to field command by sophomore quarterback Will Jaisle, the Batesville Bulldogs (4-4) turned a narrow 4-point advantage in the third quarter Friday to a 34-16 final as the Franklin County Wildcats were upended on their 2022 senior night. FC (2-6) had won the prior four games in the neighboring rivalry.

Jaisle rushed for over 120 yards with a pair of scores (total) and led the Dogs' offense on two touchdown drives after the Cats had made it 20-16 on a 12-yard pass from soph QB Quinn Gillman to senior running back Brady Morehead with 5:38 to go in the third. Morehead's 45-yard run down the left sideline had set up the score. A conversion pass to freshman Mason Wewe cut the lead to four.

BHS answered before the stanza ended, going 73 yards on nine plays to go up by 11. Jaisle scrambled for 24 yards on a 3rd-down play and found classmate Carson Schneider for a 32-yard gainer on another. On 1st-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Jaisle rolled to his right and threw across his body to senior Bryson Bonelli for the score. Brady Wonnell's extra point made it 27-16.

A helmet-to-helmet call aided FC's next drive but on 4th-and-6, Gillman's pass was incomplete to Jack Seals.

Taking over at their own 36, the Bulldogs proceeded to march 64 yards on eight snaps. The Wildcats committed a horse collar tackle (15-yard flag) and a facemask (5 yds.) to go with a Jaisle 20-yard run. The QB added a 7-yard jaunt inside the 10 and sophomore Gage Pohlman finished the drive with a pair of rushes. Wonnell tacked on what would be the game's last point.

Down three scores with just 4:34 remaining, FC required a minor miracle to get back in the contest. Sophomore Cade Kaiser quelled divine intervention when he intercepted Gillman and returned the pigskin about 30 yards.

Batesville opened the game going 64 yards on 11 plays. Jaisle and Pohlman had runs of 19 and 15 yards, respectively, and junior Deacon Hamilton took it in from four yards out.

The Cats progressed on their opening possession with Gillman and Morehead connecting on a 10-yard pickup for a first down and the latter gaining a new set of downs after a 14-yard draw play. Then facing 3rd-and-8, consecutive passes to the end zone – intended for Morehead and Blake Stephenson – dropped to the ground.

Early in the second quarter, senior Bryce Hodapp sacked Jaisle on 4th-and-11 to give FC the ball. This inspired the offense to complete an 11-play, 55-yard drive. After Morehead gained first down on a 16-yard inside handoff, Gillman went 35 yards for an apparent TD. A holding call put FC back to the 41. On a 4th-and-1, Gillman carried for five. He later found Morehead for an 11-yard touchdown and ran in the conversion for an 8-7 FC lead.

BHS responded after a short kick set the Dogs up at midfield. A questionable pass interference call on the hosts negated an illegal man downfield whistle on the Bulldogs. FC was called twice for offsides, leading to Jaisle's one-yard sneak and Wonnell's point after.

The Dogs had a golden opportunity when play resumed in the second half. On 4th-and-10, a snap went over the head of the punter Wewe and BHS recovered at the FC 12. After an FC pass interference, Jaisle scooted in from three yards out. The PAT was wide, making it 20-8. Senior Peyton McCreary gained 20 yards on the ensuing scoring drive for FC.

Morehead had over 130 yards from scrimmage on the night. Prior to the game, he and eight other seniors were recognized – McCreary, Hodapp, Clayton Bolser, Spencer Bath, Jay Schallick, Terrell Beesley, Phoenix Simons and Jadon Napier.
