Donald M. “Mike” Schalk
October 12, 2022 at 1:41 p.m.
Mike Schalk's favorite holiday was opening day of deer season. The quietness of the wait, the rush of the hunt and enjoyment of the outdoors was what Mike lived for and it is with great sadness that he passed away on October 7, 2022 at the age of 71.
Donald M. "Mike" Schalk, was born on December 17, 1950 to Donald H. and Carrie (Smith) Schalk and grew up on Drewersburg Road. He was the big brother of John, Janet, Dixie and Vickie. Mike grew up learning the bricklaying trade and by 9 yrs old was helping his dad Don Schalk mix mortar.
By the time he graduated high school he was running his own crew for the family business. Mike married Shirley Kerns on June 2, 1973 and they were blessed with a daughter Brandy. He went to work for Deerfield Construction and then as a carpenter for Surecraft Builders, from which he retired. In the 1970s he served on the New Trenton Volunteer Fire Department and also was a member of the Mt. Carmel Conservation Club until it closed. Growing up on the farm, he understood hard work and the love of farming. He was known in Franklin County for his vegetable garden and that he had the “Best Tomatoes” around. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed sharing the love of fishing and hunting with family and friends. He taught his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews how to fish and hunt.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Shirley (Kerns) Schalk; daughter: Brandy Schalk; grandchildren: Trevin Manderschied and Julie Jacob; siblings: John (Betty) Schalk, Vickie Schalk, Janet (Lambert) Ison and Dixie (Jeff) Myers; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Leslie Roessler.
Visitation was held at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, on Tuesday, October 11,until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. Brother Ronnie Wolfe presiding. Burial followed at Drewersburg Cemetery.
The family will be creating a scholarship fund in Mike's memory. If you would like to donate to the scholarship in his memory, make the check payable to Shirley Schalk and in the memo, put scholarship. A funeral home representative was present to accept memorials. If you were unable to attend, you can mail your donation to Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, OH 45030.
