BEECH GROVE – Franklin County's Wildcats and their coaching staff opened up the playbook a little more to surprise the host Beech Grove Hornets Friday night, 20-15.
Coming into the game averaging about 11 passes per contest, FC let the pigskin fly with sophomore quarterback Quinn Gillman putting up a season-high 18 passes and 202 yards to go with a pair of touchdowns to senior Brady Morehead.
Only an 8-0 game at halftime in favor of the Cats, each side scored in both second-half periods. BG posted eight in the third to FC's six. Both teams had single TDs in the final 12 minutes of action, the Hornets tacking on an extra point.
Morehead finished with 152 yards receiving, 83 of them coming on a long play from scrimmage. He added a rushing TD to account for all three FC scores. Gillman found freshman Blake Stephenson for the Wildcats' other two points.
Senior Peyton McCreary rushed for 100 yards on the nose and sophomore Jack Seals had two catches for 39 yards along with an interception on defense. Junior Ben Becker recovered a fumble. Senior Bryce Hodapp led the defense with nine total tackles, including a sack. McCreary and Becker were each in on eight.
FC improved to 3-6 overall.
Up next: It's sectional time in Brookville with 6-3 Indian Creek coming to Wildcat Field Friday, 7 p.m., for the first-ever matchup between the two schools. The Braves are coming off a big 60-23 loss to Class 4A Northview but had won their previous three games. There's one common opponent – Batesville. IC defeated the Bulldogs by 12 in the season opener while Batesville knocked off FC by 18 earlier this month.
Casey Gillin has done a nice job in his first season on the sidelines. Arj Lothe is a slinging left-handed senior quarterback with a lanky 6'4” build; he's amassed around 2,000 yards this year through the air on over 200 attempts. His favorite target is freshman Jaxon Ramey, who averages over 20 yards per catch. Malachi Mink heads up the rushing corps. Top tackler is junior Kohlton Scoggan. Mink and Lance Butler have multiple interceptions.
