Local dietician educates children on apples
October 25, 2022 at 7:44 p.m.
On national "Food Day," local dietician Olivia Fledderman visited Community Care located in Liberty to teach the children about the life cycle of an apple. Fledderman started her own business called Sprouted in Strength, which provides nutrition consultation to all age groups.
"One of my jobs is I work as the nutrition consultant for Community Care in Union County," Fledderman said. "I come in and do activities with the kids as well as the parents. So today, I was doing an apple sauce activity for food day to educate the kids about where apples come from, how they grow, and how we make them into applesauce."
Fledderman shared her business is geared towards prevention rather than treatment of a disease. She desires to share the method with individuals in the community. Although Fledderman works with all age groups, she believes it is essential to educate children on nutrition at a young age to instill healthy habits that will continue throughout their life.
"I think the kids were super excited,” said Fledderman. "They always want to touch everything and know what everything is, but they seemed like they really liked the apple sauce. There were several saying how it was delicious and asking for seconds."
Another primary focus for Fledderman is supporting local farmers while promoting local foods.
“It is really important for people to know where their foods are coming from while supporting our local economy. "If you are interested in having an activity like this done at a school of theirs or an organization of theirs, whether it is with kids or any age group that might be, can contact me."
