UC Commissioners discuss business

October 26, 2022 at 7:12 p.m.

By Mary Apel-

The Union County Commissioners met on Oct. 21.  Judge Cox's office spoke first regarding an office door that had been upgraded.  It was further reported that a group of citizens calling themselves 1st Amendment Auditors, known for traveling around the state filming and photographing courtrooms and government employees in order to post on Youtube, had been by.

Interest on a prior loan between Union County and West College Corner was discussed.  It seems the late Paul Wiwi had forgiven the interest, which amounted to a little over $500, though the decision had yet to be formally included in a meeting.  While the loan had been paid back in full, there was no public record of the interest forgiveness. It is valuable to note that Judy Burke Starr of WCC was in attendance and offered to pay this back personally, if that's what it took. Rather, the council unanimously agreed to move forward with the forgiveness of interest.

A discussion was held over an agreement to reimburse the town for a wastewater employee.  While working on the water/sewer expansion, the town cannot pay the salary of the employee while he is doing county work.  The work amounted to only a few hours. The commissioners agreed to get an invoice.

The hiring of a part-time custodian was brought up next. A position at 25 hours per week working Monday through Friday was posted in the paper.  A bid was accepted for part-time snow and ice removal (on as-needed basis) as well.
