On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Chris Smith Memorial Scholarship benfit will be held at the Franklin County Conservation Club. The memorial scholarship is set up through the Franklin County Community Foundation. The benefit will also support a new nonprofit organization started by Chris's wife, Holly Smith, called Remembering Chris Smith, Inc.
The nonprofit's goal is to extend a helping hand to the local community, whether through other nonprofit organizations or just a person who has found themself experiencing a hard time.
"Chris was always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone," Holly said. "It is so important to our daughters and me for the community and everyone we know to remember him in this way. The best way we can think of is through the scholarship and the nonprofit."
Saturday will consist of a trap shoot, a cornhole tournament, a chicken dinner, a trapshoot, and a basket, gun and purse raffle.
The event will begin at noon with cornhole registration and is $50 per person. The tournament will start at 1 p.m. The chicken dinner will be available from 12 to 6 p.m. Split the pot will be open all day, and raffle winners will be drawn at 6 p.m.
Chris was known and loved by the entire community and anyone else who had the pleasure of meeting him.
"There are so many things I love about Chris; it is hard to narrow it down," Holly said. “In regard to this situation, it would be his willingness to help. It was never an imposition for him to go out of his way or interrupt his day to do something for someone else. He was an amazing husband, father and person in all ways."
The community has echoed Holly's sentiment about Chris's willingness to help anyone in need and has rallied together to keep his memory alive for years to come.
"Chris loved this town. He seemed to know everyone," Holly continued. "I have lived here all my life, just like he did, but he knew everyone we encountered. He always treated everyone with kindness and respect. We want Remembering Chris Smith, Inc to be known in Franklin Co. and the surrounding areas. We want to make a difference."
The event will be held rain or shine.
