Experience the Civil War in Metamora
April 19, 2023 at 1:03 p.m.
Beginning on Saturday, April 22, community members will have the opportunity to "experience" the Civil War as the Ohio Valley Civil War Association (OVCWA) will hold a drill weekend and encampment of two Union Branches of Service at the Gateway Park in Metamora, 19067 U.S. Hwy. 52. Union infantry and artillery will employ troop evolutions and drill maneuvers from period manuals to display the drill styles of the civil war. In between drill sessions, the Union units will be answering questions. OVCWA will display a collection of period and reproduction weaponry and explanations for their changing design, influence and development during the war era and into future designs. Other opportunities to experience the Civil War Era will include the OVCWA civilian ladies group, who will share details of domestic life and dress styles to reflect the fashions and home life during the time period. In addition, a cook will be on site to prepare period food over the campfire.
Both units will be concerned with safety in the field within their ranks and the visiting public.
"The WCBA is proud to host this event at the Gateway Park," shared board member Candy Yurcak. "This educational program is a great opportunity for people to experience what is was like to be part of a civil war encampment."
The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Saturday, April 22
•Drill throughout the morning in both the infantry and artillery. At 2 p.m., infantry and artillery firing will be held with information and informal discussion for the public between drill sessions.
Sunday, April 23
•Infantry and Artillery firing at 11 a.m.
The Ohio Valley Civil War Association's purpose is to educate the public concerning the American Civil War era through presentations of living history events, parades, encampments, drill sessions, and reenactments of battles of the American Civil War.
