FC CAN quarter auction brings success and hope

By Cheyenne Lance-

Saturday, April 15th, FC CAN held a quarter auction at the Eagles. The money raised for this event all went towards the aid and assistance FC CAN provides residents during their journey and battle with cancer. The event began at 2p.m. and several vendors were lined up and ready to sell their items and provide donations towards the auction.

Kirshell Lovins, a long-time activist for fighting cancer and a cancer survivor herself, took the mic to welcome everyone to the quarter auction, explain the rules, explain what FC CAN does for our friends and family with cancer, and how we can help support the cause.

A quarter auction consists of dozens of donated items, merchandise, treats, etc from local businesses, organizations, and eateries. Items can be bid on with a quarter amount, and once those have been placed, you are to choose any of the numbered sticks to hold up.

These sticks were purchased upon entry and each one had a number at the top.

An example of a how a bid works in a quarter auction:

A treat basket with cookies or fudge is a 2-quarter bid. All guests will place two quarters in the available basket, and this allows them to hold up one numbered stick. If you want to hold up more, then each stick is an additional two quarters. Once the quarters have been placed, Kirshell drew numbers out of a large bin. If the number she called was on one of the chosen sticks you held up, then the item was yours. If a number called was one of yours but you didn't choose to hold that number up, then the bid was passed, and a new number was called.

The event was incredibly fun and there were so many items for the auction available:
Basket from Stengers Sugar Shack
Homemade Sign from Erin Lambert
Chopping Block and IGA gift card
Tupperware
Grilling Tool Set
Fudge from Metamora
Indiana Breweries Guide and History of FC book
Stash your Cash box
Marathon Gas card
Solar-powered garden frog
Paintings by Eunice Miller

There were dozens of great items to bid on, as well as a basket raffle afterwards. Each one was carefully designed and custom filled, and all of this was executed for the purpose of showing our residents who are battling cancer that they are not alone.

FC CAN welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer for other events in the future. This can range from working events to providing any assistance a resident may need. FC CAN is a small but mighty board of members who are taking and stand and rising up in their efforts to show cancer that it can be beaten. That it will be beaten, and that nobody is alone.
