RV Camping: RVing with kids and pets

By Cheyenne Lance-

Let's be honest. Traveling with kids or pets can be stressful if not planned properly in advance. Especially with those of younger ages. However, traveling by RV provides relief, comfort, leniency, flexibility, and control over vacationing with younger passengers.

One of the biggest challenges when traveling with kids for long periods is keeping them entertained. Even on short trips, kids get bored easily. So, it's always best to plan some entertainment for them. This could range from board games and cards. Have the kids color pictures or draw. Give the kids a challenge! Give each one a color and have them list everything they see in those colors. Along with entertainment, kids also get hungry and impatient to stop and eat. With a kitchen on board, having to get up and make food while driving isn't always ideal unless you pull over or stop. So, having designated snack bins or trays for the kids is always a plus. This allows your kids to not only have their favorites, but there is no fuss.

Campgrounds are normally kid-friendly and some even have fun activities for families and kids. Depending on where you stop for the night, there can be a pool for them to go swimming. There could be small trails. Some campgrounds provide a movie. If nothing like that is available, there is also the option to bring along some movies for the kids to watch, which also serves as great entertainment when back on the road.

Aside from keeping kids entertained on these long travels, many people often bring their pets along. There are several ways to work with this in an RV. First, the pet could be in a crate if they struggle with traveling. Each stop allows you to get them out, walk them around, feed them, and so on.

However, if you have a pet who doesn't like crates, then designating a spot in the RV for them to stay is ideal. This could be in the back with the beds. This could be by the table so that they're near you. Some even have their pets roam free as many tend to lay down in moving vehicles.

Pets do come with their own challenges, though. Eating or drinking while driving is difficult to work with as you aren't back there to keep them from making messes. The same goes for the bathroom. Stick to small treats between meals, and make sure the water is sitting steadily on a waterproof mat or towel. Pets will usually nap at some point in the traveling, and if not, then bring along some toys for them.

Most campgrounds are pet-friendly, but you are still responsible for all clean-up and care for them as this isn't provided. However, if other guests also have pets, it's a great way for your animals to make some friends, too! If you can't find any places to walk your pets, it's always best to head out towards the entrance of the campground and walk them so that your pet has more freedom and space.

RVs already provide the basics of a home on wheels and are much more comfortable than cars, planes, etc. So, however you would entertain your kids and pets at home is how you can keep them happy and satisfied on your travels and experience a great vacation. If you research your campgrounds ahead of time, along with your route as discussed previously, then finding stops and sites for kids and pets helps enhance your traveling so that everyone gets to have a great time.
