It’s National Library Week and UCPL gives us many reasons to celebrate

It’s National Library Week, and here in Union County we have a lot of reasons to celebrate. The Union County Public Library has been lending books to citizens since the first 100 books were donated by a local woman in 1888. The game has changed there since those times: no longer just a place to borrow books or even surf the internet, this space has grown into a true community hub.  Director Julie Jolliff sees the library as a place where a community’s needs can be met, on multiple levels. UCPL serves free breakfasts and lunches to children during breaks from school, provides opportunities to do laundry, has a notary available to locals, internet and printers in the computer lab, and  activities for seniors and kids nearly every day.  There are ways to connect with pretty much any basic need there, with a caring staff that will guide you in the right direction.  Further, their weekly classes in art, music, zumba, yoga, GED classes and more create opportunities to expand the horizons and health of Union County residents, something that lifts the quality of life for everyone.  In 2022 the UCPL won the Indiana Library Federation’s “Outstanding Library” award, and was commended for their innovation and compassionate staff.  And speaking of staff, UCPL’s very own Clara Sizemore was given the “Outstanding Library Staff” award!  It was a statewide sweep, one could say, and the due recognition came after a difficult Covid era, during which priorities shifted for everyone.  As plans for an expansion to the building continue to unfold (more on this to come soon) the library’s mission continues:  to unite community, empower people, and inspire ideas.  The new plans include an indoor walking track, pickleball courts, and a large space for events and meals will be added to the historic existing property, plus many more exciting upgrades.  But there’s plenty going on there currently, with activities and outreaches for literally all ages. Check out their weekly schedule on page 2.  And stop in this week sometime to let the men and women at UCPL how much their efforts in our community matter.  We are grateful!
