Franklin County sanitarian David Fehlinger visited 58 food-serving establishments in the first quarter of 2023.

Three kitchens in Oldenburg received no violations. However, two were cited for non-critical violations. These were greasy salt/pepper shakers, dirty doorjambs and interior of reach-in freezer, dirty can opener/blade, dirty walk-in door handles, a bucket of food and garbage in a basement, dirty interior of a prep station, dirty swinging kitchen door and lack of safe exit to a walk-in cooler. Correction timelines ranged from immediate to one week.

Of 13 spots inpected with Batesville addresses, 10 posted clean slates. The three others had multiple non-criticals. Moldy walk-in cooler doorjamb and shelving, moldy wire shelving in 2-door cooler, dirty Nestle ice cream freezer, dirty flooring throughout, nearby parking lot/grounds littered with trash, dust on wall and ceiling behind ovens and moldy ice chute on soda machines were among the culprits. Corrections were to be made within one to 14 days. A location in Enochsburg received a clean bill of health.

Two listed reports in Metamora brought several non-criticals and one critical –dishwasher not cycling or sanitizing properly. The critical was to be remedied in one week. Non-criticals were dirty salt/pepper shakers, moldy interior of walk-in refrigerator, grease drip from interior of ventilation hood, dirty soda machine and attachments and moldy sink drain. Fixes were to be made within one week.

Three sites in Cedar Grove and West Harrison were free of violations. In New Trenton, there was a critical for no certified food handler manager employed (60-day correction); the same site had a non-critical for moldy prep station interior (1-day).

Four of seven Laurel establishments got perfect marks. The remainder had at least one non-critical. These were dirty wire racks in walk-in cooler, dirty screen and main door handles, bar bathroom doors not self-closing, dirty refrigerator and freezer doors, moldy door gaskets and doorjambs on cooling and freezer units and greasy salt/pepper shakers. Fixes ranged from immediate to one week.

Ten of 26 sites visited in Brookville had a clean bill. Of the rest, there were three facilities with a single critical citation. Mold on interior of ice machine (immediate fix), mouse droppings under rollout 2-liter racks in lobby (3-day) and chicken in warmer not timed for disposal (immediate). Non-criticals at those three sites included moldy water nozzle, dirty area around mop sink, dirty wire racks in milk cooler, dirty can opener, dirty salt/pepper shakers, dirty microwave, dirty soda cooler fan covers and wire racks, adjacent parking lot and dumpster area littered with trash and moldy cooler door and doorjambs.

The remaining 13 shops in Brookville all had at least one non-critical finding. To wit: dirty or sticky salt/pepper/condiment dispensers, dirty flooring and walls, dirty can opener/blade, dirty soda nozzles, dirty exterior handles on stand-up freezer, dirty interior and door of walk-in cooler, moldy soda machine ice chute, dirty milkshake mixers, dirty door handles on walk-in refrigerator and freezer, moldy walk-in refrigerator doorjamb, dirty prep station interior, dusty air intake ceiling tiles, dirty floor tiles, dirty food prep station handles, tubs of raw chicken and shrimp stored on cooler floor, moldy milk wire racks, parking lot and grounds littered with garbage, dirty window sills and top of ATM, dirty cabinets.

Food inspections are a matter of public record and may be obtained from the FC Health Department.
