WCSHS Manager Joey Smith: What are his plans for Metamora?
April 26, 2023 at 1:49 p.m.
Recently, Franklin County awarded the position of Whitewater Canal Site Manager to Joey Smith. Smith took this opportunity after it was suggested by a long-time friend.
Smith originally worked at the Indianapolis State Museum and did so for seven years. He chose to leave the museum in 2015 and pursue a separate career. However, Smith stated that Brookville was always a favorite location of his. So, when learning about a position available here, and with the knowledge and experience he already had, Smith took those steps forwards and is now our site manager.
“I have a lot of new ideas in my head, but I want to take time and let Brookville adjust to me. I want, in time, to bring new things to the town," Smith states.
Smith's job includes the upkeep and coordination of the Grist Mill, aqueducts, the dam, and the canal. He hopes to provide more to any local events that Whitewater is involved with, so that residents can have the best enjoyable experience.
When asked about one of his plans, Smith spoke up about an educational program.
"Think about homeschool Wednesdays. We have these kids come in where they are provided a day of hands-on learning out here. I plan on reaching out to the schools soon to see about coordinating more of these days. Kids get a day out of the classroom, and they are still learning through experience."
This is just one of hundreds of ideas that Joey has as he eases into his new role and prepares to engage with Brookville.
"I may not have been here long, but I know that working here in Brookville is where I want to be."
