RICHMOND - Picking up from right where they left off last fall, the Batesville Lady Bulldog golfers captured the season-opening Richmond Red Devil Invitational at the Elks Club Monday on a sun-drenched course.
The Dogs totaled a team effort of 322, well ahead of runner-up Richmond at 354.
Looking for their third consecutive trip to the Indiana state finals, Ben Siefert's Lady Bulldogs entered the first official day of contests without their de facto ace, Ava South. The sophomore sensation who was third in the state a year ago has been perfecting her game all summer but unfortunately didn't have the required school practices to participate in the opener.
Senior Josie Meyer picked up the slack at the No. 1 position and led the team with a two-over round of 74, followed by junior Addyson Weiler at No. 2 with 80. Sophomore Zoey Ahern finished with 85. Freshmen Alexis Gallagher (83) and Grace Saner (109) made their varsity debuts.
The Union County Invitational was Tuesday (results not available). Saturday is the Fall State Preview tournament hosted by Floyd Central High School; the girls then visit Columbus East Monday and return to Hillcrest Tuesday to take on conference rival Connersville.
