Republicans seek to fill BTC vacancy
February 15, 2023 at 5:53 p.m.
With the recent resignation of Republican Brooke Leffingwell from Brookville Town Council, the Franklin County Republicans led by chairperson Neysa Raible will soon look to find an interested replacement from the town’s first ward.
Leffingwell was elected to council during the 2020 general election and her four-year term will not expire until Dec. 31, 2024, meaning whoever is selected will serve nearly two full years. Caucus is set for Feb. 23, 5 p.m. at the courthouse; John Estridge and Victoria Meyer have officially filed.
The county clerk’ office confirmed that willing individuals must complete a CEB-5 form: Declaration of Candidacy for a Vacant Local Office to be filled by a Political Party Caucus. To wit, an individual who wishes to be selected by a political party caucus to fill a vacancy in an elected local office must file a declaration of candidacy with the chair of the caucus.
In addition, the declaration must be filed no later than 72 hours before the caucus is scheduled to begin. This form is not required when a county chair fills a vacancy by direct appointment, and no caucus is held. Indiana Code 3-13-11 explains all this in further detail. Forms can be found at https://www.in.gov/sos/elections/electionadministratorsportal/election-forms/
Candidates must complete a notarized form which attests to their proof of voter registration, residency requirements and the fact they are not ineligible for candidacy due to a criminal conviction that would prohibit them from holding office.
Ward 1 of Brookville is primarily between Main and John streets moving north from 10th Street to include the residences and subdivisions at the bottom of Reservoir Road. It also encompasses Tinkertown and Main Street/west of Main following Cliff and Main streets’ neighborhoods down to Seventh Street.
