Adult leaders in local Boy Scouts of America programs received recognition during the Bear Creek District Dinner on Feb. 9 in Shelbyville. The Bear Creek District includes Fayette, Franklin, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Wayne and Union counties.

Todd Lakia of Pack 33, Rushville, was awarded the "Guiding Light Award." The award is presented to scout leaders who provide consistent leadership in their responsibilities.

This year's other recipients include Kim Vournazos of Troop 100, Richmond, Jenalee Wooldridge of Pack 6, Cambridge City; Misty Hanover of Pack 223, Shelbyville; Sarah Hasecoster and Matt Hasecoster, both of Pack 115, Richmond; Eric LaBoyteaux of Pack 166, Connersville; Brian Kelly of Troop 223, Shelbyville and Colleen Turner of Pack 115, Richmond.

Rick Walke of Shelbyville received the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor to be presented locally to an adult volunteer. He is active with boy Troop 203 and girl Troop 2030, where he serves as Eagle Scout coordinator.

In addition, Walke has served on several committees in the district, including a term as the district committee chair. Walke is also active with the Knights of Columbus #822.

Alisha Hood, Cubmaster of Pack 6 in Cambridge City, and Scott Hughes, scoutmaster of Troop 223, Shelbyville, each received the District Award of Merit.

Hood has been a Cub Scout leader since 2018 and became active with Pack 6 in 2021. She organizes the district pinewood derby race and will serve as the volunteer day camp director in June.

Hughes has been an adult scout leader since 2011. Besides helping lead Pack 223 and Troop 223, he leads district camporees and works in the Firecrafter and Order of the Arrow programs.

The district's Scouter Legacy Award went to Bill Benedict of Richmond, scoutmaster for Troop 100, and Steven F. Lancaster of Shelbyville, Cubmaster of Pack 203 and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 203.

The Phyllis Woolard Award, named in honor
of a retired office manager for the Scout council, was presented to Gary Clavell of Connersville. Clavell has been a Scout volunteer for more than 50 years, he became scoutmaster of Troop 166 this year rather than see the troop fold for lack of leadership. He helps in many district activities.

The district also recognized youths who earned the Eagle Scout award in 2022. They are Daniel Gabbard, Tristin Maloney, Alexander Grove, Samuel Paddock, Justin Swift, Joseph Weir, Sean Ferguson and Antonio Harbert.
