An EIAC battle took place at the Spartan Bowl Friday night when Franklin County visited Connersville. The Lady Spartans held with FC for most of the game but a few late runs by the Lady Cats let them pull away to earn a 14-point victory. The win was the 11th on the season for FC and they are now 3-3 in EIAC games.

The Lady Spartans took a 2-0 lead with Abbie Schwartz scoring the first bucket of the game. Kassidy Schell scored for the Lady Cats, then Nicole Mears scored the next six points in the contest, putting FC up 8-2. Connersville's Jacey Wilhelm and Sara Ruble scored, pulling it back to a two-point game. The Lady Cats added five more points in the quarter and led 13-8 after one period.

The second quarter began with Connersville freshman Addison Jones knocking down a pair of free throws and Schwartz scoring to make it a one-point game. Mears landed a field goal for FC, but a free throw and a Jones three-pointer put the Lady Spartans up 16-15. Kiersten Schell scored for the Lady Cats and the lead bounced back and forth for the next three minutes. Tied at 20-20, FC went on a 6-0 run with Mears scoring four of those points. Jones put up two points for CHS, then Mears scored the final basket of the half and FC led 28-22.

Connersville came out in the second half and cut the lead to two within the first two minutes. Josie Rolfes pushed it back to a five-point game after hitting from deep, then Jones and Wilhelm each added two points via the charity stripe, and Schwartz powered in a layup to give the Lady Spartans the lead. Wilhelm hit again and it was 37-34 with Connersville leading and two minutes remaining in the third period. Ka. Schell scored and started a 7-0 FC run to close out the frame with the Lady Cats back on top 41-37.

Franklin County came out in the fourth quarter and extended the lead, scoring four more unanswered points. Hailey Sembach stopped the FC run and they led by six midway through the period. The Lady Spartans soon found themselves down by 10 after two quick FC baskets and were forced to foul. The Lady Cats hit four of their six freebies and pulled away from Connersville to win the conference match 57-43.

Senior night
Somehow, the Hagerstown Lady Tigers have six wins to their credit in 2022-23; a fact hard to believe after watching them fall 49-10 at Franklin County's senior night Saturday.

Facing the all-senior lineup of the Schell girls, Rolfes, Crain and Stacy, the Tigers pitifully had one point at halftime and did not score their first field goal until the 2:57 mark of the third quarter. Lucky to get to double digits, the 10-point effort was HHS' third-lowest total this season after games of four and eight points.

Neither side scored in the opening three minutes of action, but Ki. Schell changed that tune with a 3-pointer from the wing at 4:55. Then, in less than two minutes, the hosts had a 9-0 lead all credited to the Schell twins. Kiersten added a steal and layup and Kassidy a reverse lay-in and two foul shots. Hagerstown's first point was put in by freshman Avery Blunk.

The second quarter went 8-0 in favor of the Wildcats. Mears passed out to Ki. Schell for a trey early in the frame. Crain was then fouled after an offensive board – a sequence that repeated itself three times by night's end – and put in the first of her game-high 13 points. Mears banked one in to make it 15-1 before three straight fouls forced her to the bench. Hagerstown continued its struggle from the field and the stripe; Crain's two free throws with 2:14 left produced the half's final points, the scoreboard reading 17-1.

A feed to Crain and Ka. Schell's left-hand layup put FC up by 20 early in the third. A Kasiti Ferriell free throw broke a 12-0 string. Crain drained two more at the line to make it 23-2 and the last three minutes of the period had the likeness of a ball game.

Ferriell broke the ice with a short shot, followed by a Rolfes three. Delaney Oliger hit from the baseline for the guests, but the Schells hit consecutive long balls – Kiersten off the glass, then one from Kassidy. A dish to Havanna Harris made it 32-8 before Ki. Schell assisted on a Crain bucket to end the frame.

Crain opened the fourth with a goal and Stacy got in the scorebook with a triple; Hagerstown called the game's lone timeout. Blunk got the Tigers into double digits. It was 44-10 when FC coach Kyle VanMeter pulled his regulars.

Kiersten Schell finished with 11 and her sister 9. Mears and Rolfes had 4 apiece.

FC (12-5) visits Perry Meridian Jan. 18, hosts Indianapolis Chatard Saturday afternoon and plays a final EIAC game Tuesday at South Dearborn. The Cats have already improved upon last year's win total.
