March 1, 2023 at 5:52 p.m.
On Monday afternoon, a band of severe storms hit the region between roughly 1:40 and 3 p.m. The primary threat was severe damaging winds with the possibility of tornados. Therefore, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for the region. Additionally, a Tornado Watch was issued for Union County, and a Tornado Warning was issued for portions of Decatur, Franklin and Ripley counties.
After 2 p.m., the severe weather extended from east-central Indiana into west-central Ohio and continued into the Miami Valley. The greatest severe threat eventually shifted into central Ohio.
Since the conclusion of the storms, NWS Wilmingtonhas received numerous reports of damage and is compiling all information from this afternoon's events.
At this time, no tornados have been confirmed in Franklin, Ripley or Union counties. However, NWS Wilmington stated storm surveys were scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, to investigate damage in Butler, Pickaway, and Clark Counties. Preliminary results will be reported when a determination is made regarding whether the storm in question was tornadic. A final report will then be issued.
"Today's storm was proof that severe thunderstorms can occur any time of year, and it's important to pay attention to the weather," said Franklin County EMA Director Amy Lindsey. "This storm could've turned tornadic at any time, so having multiple ways to receive weather information is critical."
